Organisers of Galway's 2020 Capital of Culture celebrations are appealing to homeowners across the city and county to open their houses to visitors when the time comes. The housing scheme which is being labelled Tar Isteach - the Irish for come in - is aimed at promoting a cultural exchange between Galwegians and visitors from across the world.

Galway was officially crowned the European Capital of Culture in a ceremony last Friday, which resulted in a festive fever breaking out across the county, as thousands of spectators flocked to Shop Street to watch the final decision being made.

Today, Friday 15th July 2016, at the National Concert Hall, an international selection committee announced that Galway will be the European Capital of Culture in 2020, after a selection process that included competitive bids from Limerick and the Three Sisters region.

Patricia Philbin is coolness personified. For a woman who is driving a project that is worth an estimated €50 million to Galway, she is very laid back about it all. She is that way because Galway is very confident about its bid — a 100-page document outlining more than 40 projects that will transform this city for a period of five years — and then for about a century after.

Galway county councillors have backed the city’s bid for the European Capital of Culture at a meeting on Monday following an update on the project from the bid team.

Everyone is being asked to get on board and do what they can to support the European Capital of Culture 2020 bid ahead of the June 17 deadline for the submission of Galway’s bid book for the competition.

The dream is still alive. Galway remains in with a fighting chance to be named the 2020 European Capital of Culture after the final round of shortlisting for the designation took place in Dublin last Friday. Galway’s bid made it through the process, along with Limerick, and the South East counties, while Dublin has been eliminated from the race.

The fate of Galway City’s bid to be the European Capital of Culture 2020 will be known by teatime tomorrow (Friday) after a panel of judges eliminates at least one, if not, two cities from the process.
